NVDS is a free screen reader designed to help visually impaired people to use computers. It supports a range of applications, and offers multiple ways for making text-based digital content available to people who ordinarily have trouble reading screens.
NVDA understands that visually impaired people have a range of different skills and needs, and so aims to cater to as wide a spectrum of users as possible. It contains a speech synthesiser that can read out text-based content; this feature supports over 50 languages, and the pre-included synthetic voice can be replaced using downloadable add-ons. It also supports refreshable braille displays, and is compatible with braille keyboards. With NVDA, you can hear text announced as you place your mouse over it, and if necessary also receive audio indication of the mouse's present position. Whether you use a mouse, a keyboard or a touch screen, NVDA will use audio information to help you to navigate with ease and accuracy.
NVDA is designed to be an easy app to get up and running. It has an intuitive talking installer, and can also run directly from a flash drive without being installed. As NVDA is open-source, its userbase is regularly coming up with updates and additions.
