Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Classic is a premium action game from SEGA, originally released in 1992 for the SEGA Genesis platform. In this platforming experience, players return as Sonic, the blue anthropomorphic hedgehog, as he runs to stop the plans of Doctor Robotnik. Experience retro graphics across various side-scrolling levels, collect rings, and defeat enemies.
Another key feature that made Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Classic go down in video game history is that it marked the first appearance of Sonic’s best friend Tails, a two-tailed flying fox. See how it compares to other entries like Sonic Utopia or Sonic Frontiers.
In Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Classic, you join Sonic and Tails as they try to stop Doctor Robotnik and his robot minions from harvesting the planet’s Chaos Emeralds in order to power his ship. Like other games in the series, this entry features fast-paced side-scrolling levels where you control either character with the goal of collecting gold rings and defeating enemies. Each zone is made up of a couple of stages, and ending with a boss.
As mentioned, one of the main draws of this sequel is the first appearance of Miles “Tails” Prower, the deuteragonist of the story who has also appeared in all succeeding Sonic games. He is available as the second-player character, or as an alternative to Sonic in single-player mode. Here, however, he doesn’t have his ability to fly or to glide yet, at least not until Sonic Chaos.
As the sequel to the original Sonic the Hedgehog game, it features more in-game content overall. There are 20 Acts divided across 11 Zones, including the iconic Emerald Hill Zone and the Sky Chase Zone, both of which inspired future design concepts in the franchise. Each Zone ends with a boss battle, which has different designs and attack patterns, adding variety to the overall gameplay.
In terms of visuals, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Classic features 16-bit graphics. While it definitely appears dated by modern gaming standards, it was at one point considered the pinnacle of gaming technology. Even now, elements in the game are distinguishable and the important aspects remain even when you’re moving at insane speeds. It also features an accompanying chiptune soundtrack, which helps complete the theme of a particular zone.
As a faithful port of the original SEGA Genesis game, the cheats and secrets are also included in this version of the game. You can simply collect all Chaos Emeralds, or choose levels, provided you know the correct codes. Similarly, there are a lot of secrets in the game, which severely incentivizes replayability especially since some of them require very specific steps to unlock.
Overall, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Classic is a great addition to any gaming library. This is a unique retro game that ticks all checkboxes and then some. Its side-scrolling platformer conveys speed without turning everything into a messy blur. It also has well-designed levels and catchy chiptune soundtracks. It has enough content to keep you engaged for hours on end, plus the promise of discovering something you might have missed in your first playthrough. Definitely recommended.
