Dragon’s Dogma 2 is an action game that mirrors the events of Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen. In this long-awaited sequel to the popular RPG title from Capcom, players take charge of Arisen as he finds and ultimately challenges the dragon that marked him. The adventure is also made more immersive through the use of Pawns, non-playable characters that you can enlist to join your party.
Aside from the massive map and next-gen graphics, Dragon’s Dogma 2 is a major improvement over its predecessor, driven by community feedback. It is comparable to games like Elden Ring or Baldur’s Gate 3.
Like other games in the franchise, Dragon’s Dogma 2 follows the adventure of a chosen hero going against a dragon. This title, however, is set in a parallel world that shares similarities with the first Dragon’s Dogma game. However, the chosen Arisen here is also embroiled in a conflict between the two kingdoms of Vermund and Battahl. This adds more depth to the cliched hero’s adventure premise.
As mentioned, this much-awaited sequel was built on players’ feedback on the first game. It features a map that’s four times larger than its predecessor, with seamless open-world in contrast with the previously linear gameplay. There are new Pawns, which are NPC allies, as well as Vocations—closely resembling character classes in other RPG games. Lastly, there are timed and randomized emergent scenarios, forcing players to adapt.
As a parallel world, it shares a lot of similarities with the first game. This sets up a disadvantage in various aspects. First, the selection of enemies does not vary that much. Also, one of the major changes it implements is the uniqueness of each Vocation. This can be an issue for some players, since there is no melee lock-on and no dodge roll for everyone, except for certain characters.
While Dragon’s Dogma 2’s long-anticipated official release has been successful, it’s not without hiccups. One of its main issues is its fluctuating graphics, which can disrupt an otherwise smooth gaming experience. Meanwhile, game crashing and freezing happen quite often, as well. To remedy these issues, the development team is working on patches that can solve the problem. Plus, there is no way to restart the game yet, but the team is working on that too.
Capcom places its bets on what made the original game stand out. Dragon’s Dogma 2 offers more content, better Pawns to help you, more Vocations to choose from, and the use of a parallel world to put a spin on an already familiar world. However, this decision also poses an issue for certain players. The lack of new enemies or the movement mechanics’ restrictions are some of them.
