Billie Bust Up is a 3D action platformer game in which music plays a central role. It is an adventure game that follows the titular character, Billie, and a number of other characters. There is a range of main characters to choose from, each with their unique song to set the tone for their personality and motives.
Billie Bust Up takes many cues and inspiration from classic 3D platformers, such as the Spyro Reignited Trilogy. However, it features rhythm-based gameplay akin to games like Rhythm Doctor. The game requires players to make it through different levels and defeat bosses.
Step into the hooves of Billie, a brave and determined young goat on a quest to follow in her long-lost father’s footsteps and reclaim powerful magic. Billie is not alone on this adventure, though — she is guided by her mystical axolotl mentor, Aristotle, and accompanied by her playful pet fox, Oscar. Together, they explore fantastical realms, face formidable villains, and master incredible powers.
Similar to Spyro the Dragon or Mario 64, the core gameplay of Billie Bust Up is relatively standard 3D adventure platforming. It adds a twist to that core gameplay, though, by introducing rhythm mechanics, particularly in boss fights, where the player can use the music as a guide to help them avoid the boss’ attacks. Seamlessly blending platforming action with rhythm-based mechanics, it has players synchronizing their moves to the beat of the music.
Additionally, the game boasts a cast of memorable characters, from grinning ghosts with grim invitations to crafty feline smugglers and self-aware puppets. Each character is brought to life with complex backstories and distinct personalities, and their stories contribute to a plot that explores themes of friendship, family, and hidden secrets. Finally, you can share the fun by playing local co-op. However, there’s no online multiplayer option.
Fans of 3D adventure platformers will find much to enjoy about Billie Bust Up, but it requires players to be on board with the game’s rhythm aspect. If someone is not a fan of rhythm games, they will likely get frustrated by this. It can also be played using shared and split-screen co-op, though there is no online multiplayer mode.
