Unlike some VN games, the options—and their subsequent effects—in the game have a refreshing lack of predictability. Some small decisions often have surprising yet plausible outcomes that have a significant effect on the storyline. The dialogues and general representation of both leading ladies are also relative and emotive, making them well-rounded and endearing. As noted, the game has seven endings, each revealing more about the characters, their relationship, and the world around them. 

Fans of He’s work will instantly recognize this game with its beautiful art design. The game features a soft pastel and watercolor aesthetic, which complements the tone of the storyline. It also comes with a lo-fi soundtrack, with cute and minimal yet heartfelt lyrics that perfectly match the melancholic tone of the story. Bit of a warning, though: this game deals with heavy themes, which can be triggering to some individuals.

All in all, a new life is a stunning visual novel. The game cleverly weaponized a narrative that will subtly pull on your heartstrings and elicit a genuine emotional response. It is a touching portrayal of love, loss, and loneliness that will definitely make you cry. Although it has a short runtime, its effects on your emotions will stay longer.
