Help Build More Wonders of the World in This Puzzle Sequel

7 Wonders 2 is a puzzle game that flings you back in time to help build the world’s most famous and massive structures that have withstood the test of time. Developed and published by MumboJumbo, 7 Wonders 2 is the second installment in the 7 Wonders franchise, a long series of quick match-3 game titles all revolving around history and forming ancient buildings. Here in this game, the free swapping rule is introduced to the series.

One, Two, Three

Puzzle games come in many different forms. Some are based on language or math and science. Some are scenarios that require logic to solve. Others are merely visual and need visual solutions, as well. This genre is filled with a variety of subcategories and tons of game titles have dominated their respective puzzle genres to be called classics. Now, while we can’t say that MumboJumbo’s 7 Wonders games are the best in the match-3 subcategory, we can say that it’s an old and classic game that many people will remember. Match-3 or tile-matching is a type of puzzle video game wherein you manipulate tiles to make them disappear according to a matching criterion. The number of tiles needed is usually three, hence the name “match-3.” It doesn’t have to be pure blocks like in the famous Tetris. As long as they’re aligned and have matching criteria, you can get rid of them and net points that will help you win the round. The same premise can be found in popular mobile games such as Candy Crush, Gardenscape, and even the old classics such as Bejeweled and Zuma. You don’t even need an enthralling plot for match-3 games—you play it for the fun challenge of matching tiles.

Help Build The Old World

The 7 Wonders games have long been trying to work on this aspect of their gameplay. Their most prominent feature is the plot of ancient history and helping in the construction of ancient structures that are famous today. The first 7 Wonders game showed you the Wonders of the Ancient World, such as the Great Pyramid of Giza and the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. This time in 7 Wonders 2, you are transported to the Wonders of the Forgotten World. You get to construct the Stonehenge of England and the Moai Statues of Easter Island. The gameplay largely remains the same—swap rune tiles to destroy the blocks they’re on to supply your workers of construction materials, and get rid of blocks to bring down the important cornerstones and capstones of the Wonder you’re working on—but now there are new power-ups whenever you match 4 or more tiles on the board. You also get to actually direct the construction of the Wonder instead of just passively watching it be built in the background while you play. There’s now a Secret Challenge level, as well, and you can now shuffle the board for new tiles.

Matching Madness

Perhaps more than the classic match-3 gameplay, the best thing about 7 Wonders 2 and its sister titles are its focus on educating you about the various structures you’re building. The animation is dated now and compared to other titles the game mechanics aren’t anything new or exciting. However, if you feel like killing some time and getting lost in tile-matching, this game can provide that and teach you about history at the same time.
