Pokémon Duel is a thrilling combination of strategy and board game mechanics that brings the classic Pokémon characters into battle. Online League matches allow you to compete with other players from all around the world to establish who is the greatest trainer of them all. Face your opponents in real-time to secure your spot on the leaderboard.
An engaging game, free-to-play game for iOS users, Pokémon Duel’s objective is simple — you just have to deploy selected Pokémon units on the board and have them seize the opponent’s side slowly but surely. Reaching the goal on the opposite end of the board results in a victory.
Selecting the six Pokémon for your team can be a strategic task as each unit possesses unique strengths and a specific number of steps it can take. Your game plan could involve rushing toward the goal along different routes or blocking your opponent’s units from advancing. When a rival Pokémon is along your route, a battle ensues. The outcome is then determined by spinning the Data Disk to see which Attack each Pokémon will execute.
At the start of your turn, you can use a plate, an item that can have various effects like swapping positions of Pokémon in play or enhancing their abilities for that turn. During encounters, your aim is either to Knock Out the opposing Pokémon or make it move out of your way. As you advance in Pokémon Duel, you’ll be able to acquire more powerful units to bolster your team.
Once you’re ready to battle against online players from all over the world, you just have to tap the “League Match” button on the Home screen. Doing so will commence a fair matchup between you and another player with a similar skill level. Having no huge gaps in player prowess ensures that almost if not all matches are fair and could be anyone’s game. Winning League duels unlocks Time Boosters that contain a variety of items, including new Pokémon figures for your team.
Don’t be afraid of losing matches, though—as regardless of the outcome—you will receive Key Fragments. These can be used to open Booster Keys, giving you another pathway to collect Pokémon and power up your roster. As you continue to compete and win League matches, your rating will rise. On the other hand, the Shop offers several ways to expand your collection of Pokémon and plates. You can also opt for Material Trade instead, where you can obtain your preferred Pokémon by trading the materials you’ve collected from purchased Boosters.
Sadly, Pokémon Duel is no longer a playable game and has been that way since 2019. The decision of the publisher, The Pokémon Company, to cease the strategy game’s services has triggered a flurry of theories among its user base and industry observers. The most prevalent speculation is that the game may not be attracting the high-yield players it used to lure, impacting its profitability. Following the announcement, the company has halted the sale of paid items, allowing existing players to use any residual gems they have purchased.
When it was up and active, strategy was the name of the game in this turn-based game. An exhilarating blend of tactics and classic Pokémon characters, Pokémon Duel beautifully intertwined the thrill of competition with the love for Pokémon, offering players worldwide a platform to test their strategic prowess. The game’s mechanics of deploying Pokémon units and battling rivals on a board game-style platform provided a fresh and unique experience for players.
