A banking app for Tanzanians

Formerly known as NMB Mobile, NMB Mkononi is a free finance app by NMB Bank Tanzania, where Tanzanian citizens have access to a wealth of banking services at any period of time. So long as you’re an NMB client possessing an NMB ATM card, you can register in the app and enjoy on-the-go banking.

Provided that you enable your Tanzanian number’s roaming service, you can launch NMB Mkononi and check your bank account in another country. Conversely, you won’t be able to access its services if you’re using an overseas phone number.

NMB Bank is a Tanzania-based commercial bank that boasts over a hundred branches nationwide, attending to the banking and financial needs of millions of clients. With NMB Mkononi by your side, you’ll be able to check your current bank balance, pay your utility bills and enjoy ATM card-free withdrawals. It also supports inter-bank fund transfers, as well as transfers between NMB users or through an MNO (mobile network operator). 

For your reference, all transactions include a digital receipt containing the date and time of the transaction, name of the user and recipient, transaction type, amount, purpose, and reference number. If you need cash for your education or a business venture, this app offers loans that you can repay for up to 28 days. However, it’s worth noting that loans include a transaction fee on top of your borrowed amount.

In addition, its card management system lets you block or replace a card as you deem fit. As you explore the app, you can try your hand at investing to augment your income, or take advantage of its salary advance service to get your paycheck earlier. Unfortunately, most users have reported frequent log-in issues and crashes, leading to more unfulfilled transactions.
